Most of the options and settings are hidden in lists and menus, so it isn't the most intuitive fitness app out there, though you get used to it. The app is the same as we've seen with other Garmin trackers, with a largely black-and-gray design scheme and splashes of color for achievements and stats. Once connected, the Forerunner 35 syncs with your device automatically. It took about a minute to pair my Samsung Galaxy S6, then several more to run an update.

For comparison, the Apple Watch Series 2 only lasts about a day, or five hours with GPS enabled. That's enough time for a long race or a short marathon. The Charge 2 lacks waterproofing, though it's resistant to rain, splashes, and sweat.Д«attery life is estimated to last nine days in watch mode, or 13 hours with GPS activated, which seems accurate from my tests-I only had to recharge the Forerunner once in two weeks of use. You can swim with it, but it can't track sessions like the TomTom Spark 3, the Garmin Forerunner 735XT, or some other waterproof fitness trackers. The Forerunner 35 is rated 5ATM, so it's waterproof.

When paired with your phone, you can view the weather, highs, lows, and even the chance of precipitation by the hour. The rest show calories, active minutes, and the results of your last workout, including total duration, distance traveled, and splits. Next, you'll see steps, your step goal, and distance traveled. The next one shows your current and average resting heart rate. Pressing the bottom right button scrolls through more screens.

You'll also see Garmin's Move Bar at the bottom of the display, which shows up when you're inactive just get up and walk around to make it go away. The main screen shows the time of day, date, and indicators for battery life and alarms. The bezel is wide, with symbols that indicate each button's functions, as well as a Garmin logo, which gives it a sporty look. Even in dim situations, it's easy to catch light on the screen to view the time, and you can activate the backlight in the dark.

The always-on, 0.93-inch, 128-by-128-pixel monochrome LCD display features big, bold numbers and letters that are easy to see. You need to snap the cable onto the ports in order to charge the watch. You'll also find four metallic pins, which connect to the Forerunner 35's proprietary charging cable. Unlike the Vivoactive, the Forerunner 35 doesn't require a chest strap. On the opposite side of the case you'll find three green lights for the built-in optical heart rate sensor. Its smooth silicone band comes in black, blue, green, or white, and feels more comfortable to wear than the bulkier Fitbit Surge. It's essentially a watch, with a case made of hard plastic that measures 1.4 by 1.6 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.3 ounces. It costs a bit less and remains our Editors' Choice.Дesign and Display With its square shape and display, the Forerunner 35 resembles Garmin's original Vivoactive more than the newer Vivoactive HR. It's a great option if you need GPS, but if you can live without that feature, look at the Fitbit Charge 2. It's all wrapped up in a waterproof design that has long battery life, push notifications, and the ability to control music playback on your phone. It allows you to track bike rides, walks, and runs, and view your resting and continuous heart rate, as well as your heart rate zones. If you're looking for built-in GPS and heart rate monitoring, however, it's one of the best values you'll find. For $199.99, the Garmin Forerunner 35 certainly isn't the least expensive fitness tracker on the market.
